![]() ![]() Rick Riordan has now sold an incredible 55 million copies of his books worldwide 'It's Buffy meets Artemis Fowl. Mythological monsters and gods are after him and he only has ten days to rectify what they want from him. The first book, 'The Lightning Thief,' focuses on Percy Jackson, who is about to get kicked out of boarding school for the second time. This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea. Cover of 'The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1).' These are Lala’s parents, and Lala then rolls the narrative back, goaded by a scolding second voice whose identity we learn later, to tell us how a desolate, abandoned girl named Soledad became the Awful Grandmother. Narrator Lala begins with a particularly dreadful trip during which “the Awful Grandmother” reveals a shameful secret from her favorite son’s past to humiliate her detested daughter-in-law. ![]() A sprawling family saga with a zesty Mexican-American accent from Cisneros, author of, most recently, Woman Hollering Creek (1991).Įvery summer, all three Reyes brothers drive with their wives and children from Chicago to Mexico City to visit their parents. ![]() ![]() The people are ordinary, but not ordinary like you would see in the grocery store. If you hadn’t guessed, it’s a long way to get to the part of the galaxy they need to connect, so the book mostly consists of random events happening to ordinary people over a very long space journey. This story is almost more exciting than the plot of the book itself, which follows some ordinary people on a mission to create an artificial wormhole connecting one part of the galaxy to another. ![]() Afterwards, she published a few sequels and won the Hugo award for best series. Becky Chambers essentially paid the costs to write it through a kickstarter, backed by about fifty people and earning her $3,000, and self-published. ![]() Why this book exists is a thrilling story of hope and success in and of itself. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet deserves every accolade thrown its way because it does something no one else has tried before and, despite its weaknesses, it does it exceedingly well. Like these weird aliens, the book is flawed, and also like them, I am so very glad that it exists. ![]() For a long stretch at the start you wonder if you’re just going to spend the whole book reading about weird aliens sitting at a dinner table congratulating each other for existing. Some of its plot points blaze into glorious satisfaction, others fizzle and leave you wondering why they were ever included (looking at you, Rosemary’s dad). ![]() It’s not an action-packed romp, nor is it a sexy romance. With that out of the way, if you’re looking for problems with this book you’ll find them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Although the book is written in third person, Beatty used simple language and short sentences, which made me feel as though young Serafina was telling me her story herself. I found the main and secondary characters to be well written and full of relatable, human emotions. She is physically different from others, and the mystery of her family origins as well as of the Man with the Black Cloak kept me quickly turning the pages. The main character, Serafina, is wonderfully written. This story sounded like a wonderful adventure and childhood dream come true. ![]() Having been born and raised in the southeastern United States, I recall a trip to the Biltmore Estate in my younger days and simply being in awe of this “castle.” No child has ever visited Biltmore Estate and not wondered what it would be like to live there, even in the basement, and be able to sneak around and have your run of the place at night. It is eye-catchingly beautiful with a silhouette of the young heroine against the night sky over the Biltmore Estate. I am so excited that I have FINALLY had a chance to read this book!
